Meet Our Founder

Nadia Patel

Nadia Patel founded The Monarch Club with a vision to address some of Iowa’s most pressing challenges through one innovative solution: supporting pollinators, improving environmental sustainability, and strengthening community well-being.

While still in high school, Nadia developed a model that repurposes recycled hog manure to grow milkweed and native prairie plants, creating habitat for Monarch butterflies and other pollinators while helping reduce nutrient runoff and improve ecosystem health. What began as a local project has grown into a nonprofit organization dedicated to conservation, environmental education, and food security.

Under Nadia’s leadership, The Monarch Club has established pollinator habitats throughout Cedar Falls, partnered with the Northeast Iowa Food Bank to enhance garden productivity, distributed hundreds of pollinator plants, and helped secure the designation of Cedar Falls as a Monarch-friendly community with September 10 recognized as Monarch Day.

Nadia’s work has earned local, state, and national recognition, including the Congressional Award Gold Medal, Governor’s Volunteer Award, and Outstanding Woman of Achievement Award. Today, she is a student at Brown University studying Biology and Public Health, where she continues to explore the connections between environmental health, public health, and community impact.

Her mission remains simple: empowering communities to create sustainable solutions that benefit both people and the planet.

Passionate Environmental Stewards

The Monarch Club is where passion and action unite to preserve the monarch butterfly and make a profound impact on the environment through innovative conservation efforts.

Passionate environmentalists like us recognize the crucial role of monarch butterflies in fostering a sustainable ecosystem. As these magnificent creatures engage in pollination, they contribute directly to the increased yield of food produce. In Iowa and beyond, this means more nourishment for families, reinforcing the delicate balance between nature and our sustenance. By championing the conservation of monarch butterflies, we are not only preserving a symbol of natural beauty but also sowing the seeds for a healthier, more abundant world for generations to come.

The Monarch Club is also committed to having a positive environmental impact, and by utilizing recycled, pig manure as a resource, to create pollinator-friendly habitats, contributes to reducing pollution in water bodies, thereby preventing eutrophication and promoting healthier ecosystems.

The mission statement highlights the objectives of our club -The Monarch Club unites people from diverse backgrounds under a singular mission: to champion the conservation of Monarch butterflies and their habitats while revolutionizing our environmental impact. We're not just admirers; we're architects for change and effective solutions.

  1. Pollinator restoration - Our club is dedicated to increasing the population of pollinators, particularly the Monarch butterflies.
  2. Recycle pig manure-Our club employs an innovative approach by using recycled pig manure as a means to foster pollinator habitats. This underscores the commitment to effective solutions and sustainable practices by turning waste into a valuable resource.
  3. Environmental Impact - The mission statement emphasizes the positive impact on the environment. The utilization of recycled, pig manure contributes to reducing pollution in water bodies, thereby preventing eutrophication and promoting healthier ecosystems.
  4. Community engagement- Our club, actively involves local communities, schools, universities and organizations.
  5. Education - Our club aims to educate and empower individuals, fostering an understanding of pollinators' importance in food systems. This signifies a commitment to nurturing, a culture of environmental stewardship.
  6. Holistic approach - Our club has a comprehensive approach, addressing both the ecological aspect, (pollinator restoration, while reducing pollution in the water bodies by using recycled, pig manure as a means to nourish and foster the habitats), and the societal aspect (community engagement, and education).
  7. Long-term vision - Our club envisions a future where nature and humanity, coexist harmoniously.

In summary, our club's nature revolves around ecological restoration, sustainable practices, community engagement, and education. Its mission is to leverage recycled pig manure to revive pollinator populations, with a core focus on Monarch butterflies, ultimately leading to a healthier environment, increased pollination yielding more food produce and a more informed, engaged society.

Transforming Tomorrow's World Today

In the heart of a small community, a young girl's passion, and vision came together to find a creative solution that led to a positive movement.

The club's commitment to environmental stewardship, education, effective solutions and sustainable practices has not only beautified the community but has also inspired a larger ripple effect. By addressing critical ecological issues and fostering a sense of environmental responsibility, the Monarch Club serves as a shining example of how local actions can create a meaningful impact on a larger scale.

The uniqueness of this project lies in its innovative approach to environmental, conservation and pollinator restoration, centered around pig manure recycling. Several aspects contribute to its distinctiveness:

  1. Resource innovation- Unlike conventional approaches, this project transforms a seemingly unrelated resource -pig manure - into a valuable tool for ecological rejuvenation. The innovative use of pig manure showcases the potential of repurposing waste materials for positive environmental impact.
  2. Unconventional collaboration - bringing together the founder, local community members, students, and city officials demonstrates an unconventional yet powerful collaboration. The involvement of diverse stakeholders, unites their expertise, passion, and resources, amplifying the project’s reach and impact.
  3. Multi-dimensional impact - the project’s impact goes beyond mere pollinator restoration. It fosters environmental education, promotes sustainable practices, and builds community engagement. This multi-dimensional approach creates a ripple effect, influencing various aspects of the ecosystem and society.
  4. Educational empowerment - The incorporation of students as active participants empowers the next generation with a hands-on understanding of sustainability. The project instills a sense of responsibility and inspires young minds to become stewards of the environment.
  5. Integration of city planning - by getting support from city officials, the project showcases the integration of ecological considerations within urban planning. The collaboration bridges the gap between grassroots initiatives, and policies, highlighting the potential for citywide sustainability.
  6. Transformative vision - the founder's vision to leverage pig manure and recycling to restore, pollinator, habitats embodies transformative thinking. It shifts the perspective on waste management from a challenge to an opportunity for positive change.
  7. Catalyst for change - this project catalyzes change on multiple levels. It transforms the perception of waste, cultivates, pollinator habitats, nurtures community bonds, and inspires collective action for environmental betterment.
  8. Inspiration for others - the project’s uniqueness is an inspiration for others to explore innovative solutions for ecological challenges. Its story demonstrates that with creativity, collaboration, and a deep, rooted commitment, unconventional resources can be harnessed for remarkable outcomes.
  9. Localized environmental revival - by focusing on monarch butterflies and other pollinators, the project addresses a specific localized concern while emphasizing the broader implications for ecosystem, health, and food security.
  10. Holistic sustainability - the project's comprehensive approach, intertwines ecological, educational, and community dimensions, reflecting a holistic vision of sustainability that extends beyond just environmental impact.

In essence, the uniqueness of this project lies in its ability to turn waste into a resource, address a specific but critical concern, connect diverse stakeholders, inspire future leaders, and showcase the potential for sustainable collaborations that bridge the gap between innovation and ecological restoration.
